The Idea of Shapeshifting

There are many examples of people in the show than can shape shift. Some of them, like Sam Merlotte and Maryann Forrester, are just simply "shape shifters" and can turn into anything they want with practice and concentration. It takes a lot of effort and practice, and the simpler the form, the easier it is (ie. it is easier to become a mouse, or a dog, than a person).

However, there are also werewolves and werecats in True Blood, among other things. Crystal Norris, a lover of Jason Stackhouse, is a werepanther.

The idea that people can turn into animals implies that we are not our body. It implies that there is more to our being than the scientific, physical aspects. In order to become something else and still retain your "self", you must have some sort of soul, right?

The idea of the soul is pretty religious, and therefore in my eyes, the show is saying that just because you cannot see it or prove it is there, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

It does tie into what Sophie-Anne stated about the universe, however. If you believe something, it is real, and the universe is imagined. But if that is the case, why can't everybody change form at will?
